At the Tasmanian Awards for Environmental Excellence ceremony in Hobart on Friday 5 June, Tasmanian Alkaloids was recognised for environmental excellence in the Large Business Sustainability category for 2009.

The Tasmanian Awards for Environmental Excellence recognise and reward those Tasmanians whose actions enhance, preserve and protect the Tasmanian environment.

2009 marks the 11th year of the Awards, each year highlighting the best of Tasmania’s innovation and commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship.

The Department of Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts coordinates these Awards on behalf of the State Government.

The Large Business Sustainability award is presented for minimisation of the environmental footprint and the incorporation of social responsibility initiatives by a company, institution, organisation or business in Tasmania.

Tasmanian Alkaloids is committed to environmental sustainability and recent agricultural and manufacturing innovations have resulted in significant environmental improvements in raw material and water use, wastewater treatment and waste management - all while production outputs have increased. Reductions in the environmental footprint of agricultural and manufacturing operations include a 6% reduction in water use per unit production compared to 2007 (and a 45% reduction since 2002) and an estimated 50% reduction in fertiliser and pesticide use in the field since 2006.

The company also provides leadership in community natural resource management and enhances employee awareness of sustainability issues through specific training curriculums.

Tasmanian Alkaloids is striving to be a world leader in medicinal opiate production by growing poppies in Tasmania, and contributing to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the state.

The awards are judged by the Banksia Environmental Foundation. All category winners are automatically nominated for the foundation's national awards to be announced in July 2009.
