Pharmaceutical poppies can only be grown by farmers with a contract to grow and a licence issued by the Government of Tasmania. Prospective growers are required by law to complete an "Application for Licence to Grow Papaver somniferum". The Poppy Advisory and Control Board (PACB) also requires growers to arrange for a Police check of any court convictions, particularly in respect of drug related matters, when considering a licence.
Soils should be well-drained and fertile. Raised beds can help ensure adequate drainage in wet seasons. Poppies prefer a soil pH in the range 6.0-6.5 and lime should be applied to more acid soils. Most soils will require complete NPK fertliser -- the amount required depending on soil test results and local conditions. Poppies require a well-prepared seedbed with a minimum of clods and vegetable matter. At least a three year break between poppy crops on a paddock is desirable. |
